Transformers are used to transform electrical power through internal coils of wire. Most industrial transformers are used to reduce a primary voltage to a secondary voltage, such as 480 VAC to 120 VAC for use in control circuits where the primary power source is 480 V. Transformers can also be used the other way around to raise a voltage. Some transformers have multiple secondary voltages. Primary voltage, secondary voltage(s), kVA rating, number of phases, and transformer type are used to determine the proper transformer to be used. The operating voltage times the maximum current will give the number of volt-amperes required with some margin added for safer operation.
