Case printing and coding are used to print bar codes, text, graphics, and other information onto cases, bags, films, containers, and other materials. A few types of printing are: laser, thermal transfer, and ink-jet. Laser coders use laser printing or laser marking equipment. In laser printing, toner is transferred from an electrically charged drum to the product. Laser marking is used to etch directly onto metal, wood, or fiberboard. Thermal transfer overprinting uses a thermal transfer printer and ribbons and is often used for printing onto flexible film packaging but can print onto other materials as well. Ink jet coders spray tiny droplets of ink onto the product to form the image.
